What is Botox?
Botox, or botulinum toxin, is a protein produced by a bacterium, which is used in small amounts in medical and aesthetic treatments. In aesthetic applications, Botox is primarily used to reduce wrinkles and fine lines in certain areas of the face. This substance is essentially a neurotoxin that prevents chemical signals from reaching the nerves and temporarily reduces muscle activity. Botox treatments most commonly improve the appearance of dynamic wrinkles, caused by repeated muscle contractions from frowning, squinting, or smiling. As a result, Botox treatments help correct dynamic wrinkles by temporarily relaxing facial muscles and preventing them from contracting.
Botulinum toxin, the active ingredient in Botox, is a very potent neurotoxin produced by the Clostridium botulinum bacterium. This toxin was first identified at the end of the 19th century when Justinus Kerner, a German physician, studied mass food poisoning cases later named botulism. Kerner recognized the potential therapeutic uses of the toxin, though it was not yet used for medical purposes at that time.
In the mid-20th century, doctors and scientists continued to study the mechanism of action and potential medical applications of botulinum toxin. In the 1970s, Dr. Alan Scott, an ophthalmologist, began researching the use of the toxin for treating strabismus. Scott and his team started to recognize the toxin’s ability to relax muscles, which reduced or eliminated lines and wrinkles on the face.
The discovery of Botox‘s cosmetic applications was partly accidental. In the 1980s and 1990s, doctors observed that patients treated with botulinum toxin experienced reduced or eliminated eye wrinkles. This prompted doctors and researchers to explore the cosmetic benefits of the toxin.
Botox was approved for cosmetic use by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1989. Since then, millions worldwide have used Botox to reduce fine lines and wrinkles on their faces.
