What does dermatology involve?
The skin is our largest and sensory organ. It protects our body against injuries, prevents harmful substances and pathogens from entering the body, provides defense against the harmful effects of sunlight, prevents dehydration, regulates body temperature, and transmits various sensations.
The condition of our skin reflects the imbalance within our body, and its diseases are not only unpleasant but also visible and noticeable. With the FotoFinder Bodyscan ATBM [Automated Total Body Mapping], an automated full-body mapping procedure, the examination of the entire skin surface can be easily performed. The Moleanalyzer software used by FotoFinder is a diagnostic tool designed for the early detection of malignant melanoma, with high sensitivity and recognition of pathological features.

Procedure of Dermatological Examination

The dermatologist will extensively interview the patient about their symptoms, primarily related to the skin, although any previous illnesses may also be important. Depending on the nature of the skin symptoms, it may also involve a family medical history.

During the physical examination, depending on the clinic, not only the affected area but sometimes the entire body surface may be examined. In the case of mole examination, a detailed examination of the entire body surface is done using a special tool called a dermatoscope.

In some skin diseases, a tissue sample may be taken for histopathological examination, and further tests may be performed (laboratory tests, fungal, and microbiological sampling). Other supplementary examinations may also be conducted, such as allergy testing, patch testing for confirmation of contact allergies/sensitivities, etc.

Skin manifestations can be acute with often subjective complaints, such as insect bites, allergic skin diseases, urticaria, or infections such as bacterial, fungal, and viral infections. There can also be chronic skin symptoms that have been present for years, such as psoriasis and eczema.
Some skin diseases (such as skin cancers) can remain unnoticed for a long time because they do not cause symptoms and/or are located in hidden regions (skin folds, genital area, soles). It is recommended to visit a dermatologist annually to rule out malignant skin tumors.
There are skin manifestations that are not considered diseases. These can be benign skin growths (such as fibromas appearing in skin folds or neck), which primarily cause aesthetic concerns or can be bothersome due to their location, thus their removal can be performed for cosmetic reasons.
How to prepare for a dermatological examination?
Arrive with clean skin, nails, and hair. If possible, do not apply anything to the skin lesion before the examination. The dermatologist may examine the entire skin surface, hair, and nails for a specific diagnosis.
General dermatological examination is painless. For specific aesthetic procedures or minor surgical and laser interventions, local anesthesia is applied to avoid discomfort.
Certain treatments and examinations are not recommended on sun-exposed skin, as the immunological structure of the skin changes due to UV radiation.
